Much of this model's insulation comes from Sea to Summit's ThermalCore technology – it uses multiple layers of TRM material that reflects infrared light, sending your body’s heat back to you. The layer structure also limits internal air movement, and thanks to additional micropores, it creates ideal airflow that maintains thermal efficiency while reducing weight and packed volume.

This results in an impressive R value of 7.4 for such a lightweight mat – winter mats typically start at R value 4.5, and most expedition-grade mats range between 5 and 5.5. While R values don't directly translate to comfort temperatures, an R value of 5.5 is generally considered suitable for around -15°C. The Ether Light XR Pro performs well at temperatures as low as -20°C to -25°C.

The mat is designed for use in extreme conditions, so quick inflation and deflation are essential. For this reason, Sea to Summit developed their XPRESS valve, which is quick and easy to use. The valve features an inflation port that prevents air from escaping while you're inflating the mat, and deflation takes just seconds. The compression sack includes an integrated Airstream pump for added convenience – if you turn the pump inside out, you'll find a discreet nozzle designed for inflating pillows with the same valve system, such as the brand’s Aeros models.
