Once the filter becomes unusable, it automatically blocks itself to prevent ineffective use. This is a membrane filter that contains numerous "hollow fibers" inside, shaped like spaghetti, with extremely fine pores (0.2 microns in diameter, 500 times smaller than a human hair).
