Most common there is a filling of synthetic fibers between the cells to create the insulation. The insulation level of all mats is indicated by an 'R-value', varying between 0 and 6 depending on the level of insulation the mat provides. The products in this category are some of the lightest and most compact options, which is why they are suitable for long treks with bivouac gear, where every gram counts. In the second category you can find self-inflating mats, which use different type of foam with build air tubs, that allow them to be compressed during transport. This type of product is often more comfortable, but at the same time a bit heavier compared to air sleeping mats.
