The history of the USA brand Nalgene dates back to the production of plastic laboratory products such as jars, bottles, tubes, etc. that are more durable and lighter than glass. Plastics is still a new and revolutionary material that has not entered everyday life use. Plastic containers and bottles are gaining popularity because of their characteristics, which make them suitable for handling various substances in different temperature ranges. In the 70s, the Carry In/Carry Out trend emerged when conservationists began discouraging campers from a common disposal practice of burning or burying cans and glass containers. By then, the Nalgene labware bottles had caught on with the hiking and adventuring subculture. Even the company president's son was using our bottles and containers on his Boy Scout camping trips. This, coupled with the Carry In/Carry Out trend, gave our president an idea: market these labware products as high-quality hiking and camping essentials. In the late 1990s, the Nalgene brand was already well established and well known to the mass tourists in the USA. Sales of a 1 liter semi-transparent polycarbonate bottle with a plastic cap with a screw that stays attached, even when the bottle is open, had steadily increased. Initially, the bottle was made only in gray, but later came in a variety of bright colors, often with custom-made labels.
The laboratory origin of the Nalgene bottles has left its mark on volume markings on the walls of the products. The materials do not absorb stains and odors, and can be filled with boiling water, ice and even fruits. The wide mouth wide-mouth bottle enjoys wide popularity and is the company's highest selling product.
Over the years, a number of studies have found that under certain conditions polycarbonates made from bisphenol A (BPA) and phosgene (COCl) can release harmful substances (under some extreme conditions) such as endocrine disruptors. Responding to these developments, in 2007, Nalgene began replacing all solid, clear polycarbonate plastic water bottles with BPA-free Nalgene bottles. Subsequently, Tritan, a BPA-free copolyester manufactured by Eastman Chemical, becomes the main material to produce the bottles, as it is a safe substitute for high resistance to mechanical and thermal influences.
Today, Nalgene is a brand with a long and rich history, and is the name of a whole product category for generations of tourists in the United States and around the world.
